The Built on Gold exhibition is located in the basement vaults of the Old Treasury Museum, Melbourne. The exhibition tells the story of how Melbourne was built on the gold wealth of the 1850s gold rushes.

The exhibition follows the journey of the gold from the gold miners and gold buyers through to its shipment overseas, along with the wealth, growth and social change it brought.
The only available artefact for the exhibition was the building and the gold vaults themselves. The exhibition uses a selection of screens, historic images, audio visuals, soundscapes and interactive lighting to create dynamic interpretive and educational experience.
