Queens Wharf Brisbane is a major $3.6 billion tourism, leisure and entertainment development project in the heart of Brisbane CBD, and includes many of Brisbane's important heritage locations and buildings.

LookEar was engaged to develop the Heritage Interpretation Strategy for whole precinct including the the river foreshore and the adjacent ridgeline. The development of the strategy included an extensive engagement process with representatives of the Turrbal and Jagera Indigenous communities. Design concepts focussed strongly on the landscape values of the area, requiring close consultation with the landscape design company CUSP.

The early works for the project includes the design and development of large sandblasted paving graphics of eight Indigenous totems, along with simple interpretive signage that explains the totems system, and the duty of care to the totems and the country in general.

The resultant interpretation plan included:

  • a comprehensive thematic structure and interpretive zones

  • detailed storylines

  • recommended interpretive forms including paving treatment, discrete soundscapes, specialist lighting, interpretive signage and AVs

The project was developed in association with Mono Design and Sound Environment.
